ABSTRACT
Strategy is bread-and-butter work at McKinsey. However, many of us tend to think of strategy just one piece at a time, as in the SCP framework or the value-proposition delivery system. The authors found that there wasn't a simple way to teach people lacking the same background a strategic model that is both holistic and easy to understand. So they came up with this approach and this document, which was developed as part of a set of training materials for the newly appointed business-unit CEOs of an Asian family-owned conglomerate. The original intent was to guide new CEOs through the basic elements of developing BU-level strategic plans. The document begins by defining BU strategy, then describes the major elements of developing a BU strategic plan. Each section provides a series of relevant frameworks, and selected frameworks are illustrated with examples from the Lexmark printers case (referring to Knet documents 0234, 0202, 16STR, 21DK, and 25DK). An overview of the Lexmark case is a good companion document. We also recommend the "BU Strategic Plan Template Book” for templates to make BU strategic plans complete and consistent. Rather than replacing or constraining BU strategic thinking, those templates should be adapted to reflect the context of a particular BU. Strategic thinking does, however, follow a certain thought process, and this framework is especially useful for clients lacking a formal process or structure for strategy development.
