In 2002 motor vehicle production in Japan shifted into
the plus column for the first time in two years, rising to
10,257,318 units for a year-on-year increase of 4.9% and
recovering the 10-million level also for the first time
since 2000. This rise was due to the vigorous
performance of Japanese vehicle exports, which
registered a 12.8% jump over 2001.
Production of passenger cars increased by 6.2% to
8,618,348 units, registering its first growth in two years.
The excellent performance of passenger car exports,
primarily to North America, and an increase in domestic
sales of small cars explain this growth. Production of
