The retail apparel business fluctuates according to changes in consumer preferences dictated inpart by fashion and season. In addition, certain economic conditions affect the level of consumerspending on merchandise, including, among others, general business conditions, interest rates,
energy costs, taxation and consumer confidence in futureeconomiconditions. Consumerpreferences and economic conditions may differ or change from time to time in each market inwhich the industry operates and directly impact net sales and profitability. We have chosen twomajor players each with multiple brands in their portfolios: The Gap, Inc. and The Limited, Inc.
Leslie H. Wexner is Chairman and CEO of The Limited, Ltd. and Intimate Brands and continuesto play an important role in directing the company’s vision for future growth since he foundedthe company in the early 1960s. Similarly, Gap founder Donald Fisher’s original vision ofproviding the consumer with inexpensive, fashionable clothing for a variety of ages has been acore strategy for the company. Both companies have been trendsetters in the world offashionable, value-priced clothing for men, women, and children. One is currently in aturnaround strategy mode while the other is solidifying and growing their position within thespecialty apparel category.
